Creating Safer Communities for All project

Imagine living in a neighbourhood where:

• Parents feel it is safe for children to play out
• Adults look out for each other's children
• You know the local teenagers and their parents by name
• Both adults and young people feel the other gives them respect
• Any mischief young people get up to is sorted out within the community

Is it possible to create this where you live?

We are piloting a project in Leighton Buzzard to do exactly this. The 'Creating Safer Communities for All' project aims to:

• Encourage adults to have a positive attitude towards young people, to get to know the families in their street and create safe neighbourhoods by everyone looking out for each other's children.
• Support people to set up facilities and activities for youngsters that will provide something for them to do.
• Encourage teenagers to help out with these community activities.

We started with a small group of parents and teachers who wanted to make a difference. Our first project is to set up a youth club. There has been a great deal of support from the town council, the police, extended school services and environmental groups.

Initially we are focusing on one area of the town, and then will extend the project to other areas. We are using school newsletters and the local press to get the message out about what we are trying to achieve.

We also want to work with Neighbourhood Watch to extend the brief of volunteers to include engaging positively with youths and getting to know the young people in their street, and so helping make neighbourhoods' safe and youth-friendly.
